Who I am

I'm Trey Causey. I live in Seattle and work on AI, responsible AI, and AI evaluation. I'm a Principal TPM for Agentic Engineering in the Office of the CTO at Microsoft. Before that I was head of Responsible Technology at Indeed where I led Responsible AI and the People Science teams.

At Indeed I built the responsible AI function from one data scientist into a cross-functional team of data scientists, engineers, researchers, and product managers. I crafted Indeed's public Responsible AI principles. My team owned pre-deployment bias detection and evaluation for LLMs, LLM guardrails, and red-teaming. I also have provided feedback on bills and frameworks such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. I've written about that work in Building Successful Responsible AI Teams and Responsible AI is dying. Long live responsible AI.

Earlier, I led data science teams at Indeed, did machine learning engineering at Stripe, and managed data platform products at Socrata. I built the backend, the win-probability model, and the API for the New York Times 4th Down Bot (RIP). I also worked on data, product, and strategy at ChefSteps. Finally, I've consulted with numerous sports teams in the NFL and Premier League.

I studied at the University of Washington (Ph.C., M.A.), the College of William & Mary (M.A.), and Virginia Tech (B.S.).

I'm not the psychiatrist or the college track athlete who share my name.
